Australian Food

What is Australian food?

Australian food is both tasty and varied. Australia is a relatively new country. However, in its small history, it has adapted many cuisines from its large immigrant population. Moreover, in many cases it has created many foods from its natural environment. Yet, other foods are inspired from the cuisine of overseas countries as a result of our large immigrant population.

In Australia’s largest cities, namely Sydney and Melbourne, you may dine on the cuisine from most countries and major regional areas. In Australia, the food often tastes better than in the original country due to the abundance and diversity or fresh produce.

Australian food is fresh food and our meats, fruits and vegetables are of high quality. Because of its wide variety of climates, it is largely self sufficient in its food needs. Following is a list of many foods that are either unique to Australia or were developed in Australia. Even our many many restaurants from around the globe based in Sydney and Melbourne, often have better quality food than in the country of origin.

Breakfasts

Vegemite

Vegemite on toast is a black spread made from vegetable oil that many Australians eat religiously. It is not readily available overseas and locals often send it to Australian family and friends living overseas. The trick to this Australian food is to spread it on lightly unlike other spreads. In is quite a divisive Australian food where people either love it or hate it.

Avocado on toast

Avocado on toast is available in many cafes for breakfast. This is just avocado is spread onto a slice of toast.

Bacon and Egg Roll

Bacon and egg rolls are very common in breakfast cafes. However, you can make your own with a slice of bacon, a fried egg, some barbecue sauce and a soft roll.

Mains and Snacks – The Australian food

Mains

Barbeques

Barbecues are very common in Australia and are considered very much Australian food. However, apart from Paul Hogan, nobody has ever said “Let’s put a shrimp on the barbie“. This is because we don’t call them shrimps. We have prawns instead. Technically, the two are slightly different. Normally, we cook “snags” aka sausages, and steak (both lamb and beef). Some also cook prawns, vegetarian, kangaroo and other meats on the barbecue. When inviting friends over during summer, it is the Australian food of choice.

Chicken Parmigiana

Chicken parmigiana is a chicken schnitzel or ‘chicken schnitty‘ with ham, cheese and a tomato sauce inside the crumbed outer sheath. The schnitzel originally hales from Germany. However, the addition of the  ham, cheese and tomato possibly is a result of a high population of Italian immigrants at one time.

San Choi Bau

San Choi Bau is an Australian food dish found in many Chinese restaurants in Australia. However, it is not found in China. This is because it was developed in Australia as a result of the large Chinese immigrant population. Basically it wraps pork mince, peanut oil and some sauces in lettuce leaves.

Kangaroo

Kangaroo, whilst not as mainstream as beef or lamb is not only available in restaurants but available in the county’s two largest supermarkets Coles and Woolworths. This Australian food is not only tasty it is better for you than traditional lamb or beef due to its low fat and cholesterol content.

Hamburger with the lot

Hamburger with the lot, is an Australian hamburger consisting of a beef patty, lettuce, tomato, egg, cheese, caramelised onion, bacon and beetroot. No hamburger with the lot is truly Australian without the beetroot.

Emu and Crocodile

Emu and Crocodile may also be found in some boutique restaurants.

Whilst many Brits see Fish ‘n’ Chips as British, in Australia, the quality of our fish makes it unique. Our Barramundi, Flathead, Bream and Whiting is quite flavoursome compared to the rather plain English Halibut or Cod. Furthermore, in Australia, fish is often grilled or crumbed instead of just being deep fried.

Snacks

The Australian Dim Sim is deep fried and larger than the Chinese dim sim.

Meat pies, sausage rolls and sausage sandwiches are staple foods at carnivals and sports events. In days past, chiko rolls and dagwood dogs were also quite popular.

Damper is a traditional bushman’s bread prepared with flour, water, and salt and then left to cook in the embers of the campfire.  It is an Australian food synonymous with the country’s pioneers.

Desserts

Lamington

A Lamington is squares of sponge cake coated in chocolate and rolled in desiccated coconut.

Chocolate Crackle

The Chocolate crackle is a children’s party favourite (also found in school fetes) in Australia and has been for generations. It is a baked snack that combines Rice Bubbles, fine coconut, icing sugar, cocoa and Copha.

Neenish Tart

A Neenish tart has a pastry base, a filling of mock cream, icing sugar paste, or lemon and sweetened condensed milk mixture, with bi-colour dried icing on the top.

Pavlova

Pavlova is a meringue dessert with a crisp crust and soft, light inside, usually topped with whipped cream and fruit. It takes its name from the Russian ballerina when she toured Australia.

Vanilla Slice

Vanilla slice is a slice of thick vanilla flavoured custard sandwiched between flaky pastry and topped with icing. It is available in most bakeries in Australia.

Fairy Bread

Fairy Bread is a slice of white bread with margarine topped with hundreds and thousands and is a popular staple at children’s parties. This is an Australian food synonymous with children’s parties.

Drinks

Alcoholic

Australia is the fifth largest exporter of wine around the world, holding its own against far more established players.

Many around Australia enjoy Australian beer, with each state having its own preference. The quality of the beer is well renowned.

Coffee

On the coffee side, both the Long Black and Flat White originate in Australia. The Flat White is a coffee variety that has a double shot of freshly brewed espresso and milk, which is usually steamed to create a light, silky foam on the surface. The Long Black is an espresso shot prepared by pouring or directly extracting the espresso into a cup of hot water.

Soft Drink

Solo, a lemon flavoured soft drink and Milo, a chocolate flavoured milk additive are also Australian.

Lemon Lime and bitters is a cocktail made with a combination of lemonade, lime juice cordial, and Angostura bitters garnished with a lemon or lime slice. Whilst the bitters is alcoholic, due to the low alcohol content, it is regarded as ore of a soft drink.

Ice Creams

The Golden Gaytime is a popular ice cream combination of toffee and vanilla flavoured ice cream, dipped in a choc coating and covered in biscuit pieces. Streets make and distribute it.

Splice is an ice cream encased in a pineapple and lime frozen fruit flavoured ice. At the centre of the ice cream is a wooden stick for ease of consumption.

The Weiss bar is a pairing of a normally fruit flavour and creamy ice cream in the shape of a bar.  Popular flavours include passionfruit and coconut, and blackberry and vanilla.

Biscuits

Australian biscuits include Anzac biscuits, Iced VoVo and Tim Tam

Snackfoods

Burger Rings, Twisties (both cheese and chicken flavoured) and Cheezels are snack food chips that originate from here.

We have a number of unique chocolate snack foods that have originated here such as Freddo Frogs, Bertie Beetles, Caramello Koala, Cherry Ripe, Chomp, Violet Crumble and Picnic.

As well as a number of other confectioneries such as Eucalyptus Drops, Fantales, Fruit tingles, Milko Chews, Minties, Musk sticks and Redskins.

Make sure you sample some of our Australian food when you are in Australia.

Traditional Australian Food

In addition to the foods already mentioned, native Australians eat goanna (protected species), snake, lizard, wallaby, witchetty grubs, Bogong moths, green ants, Quandong, bush tomato, yams and macadamia nuts and have been for a very long time.

A note about Shrimp on the Barbie

Shrimp on the barbie was a television advertising campaign that was launched by Australian Tourism Commission. It starred Paul Hogan. It launched in the mid-80s to appeal to the American market. However the word ‘shrimp’ is not normally used in Australia. In fact most barbecues traditionally cook red meat (mainly steak and snags [sausages]). Aussie’s do like a ‘Surf & Turf’ which is a grilled seafood and meat combination dish that may have prawns as the seafood.

Sydney Restaurants that sell Australian Food

Australian Heritage Hotel (Pizzas with kangaroo, emu and crocodile)
Sydney Tower (Buffet includes kangaroo, emu and crocodile sausages)
Moo Burgers (Kangaroo Burgers)
Blackbird Cafe (Kangaroo)

Many pubs and clubs offer Chicken Parmigiana and Hamburgers with the lot.

Restaurants – an expanded definition of Australian Food

In Sydney and Melbourne, we are fortunate enough to have immigration from all around the world. This means that in Australia unlike many other countries, we do not just eat Australian food, the norm is to eat food from all around the world.

Tour Description

Join Travel Ideology’s Walking with wild wombats tour in Sydney and drive about 2.5 hours south, stopping to take in some spectacular scenery.

Wombats, Kangaroos and Wallabies

Once there, we will walk with one of Australia’s iconic animals – the wombat – in the wild. Whilst we may also see some other wildlife on this tour, the emphasis is on the wombat. Normally we are able to get quite close to the animals for some amazing photo opportunities. We will plan our trip to arrive late afternoon as this provides us the best opportunities to experience these unique native Australian animals. There are three species of wombats – the common wombat, the southern hairy nosed wombat and the northern hairy nosed wombat. The common wombat lives in the area we will be visiting south of Sydney.

Other Wildlife

With luck, we also have the opportunity to possibly see some of Australia’s other wildlife. In addition to wombats, we normally see lots of wild kangaroos and often see wallabies and lyre birds and a number of colourful birds. Occasionally, we may come across other animals such as echidnas and reptiles calling the area home. We visit a small pond that is known to have a platypus living but these very shy and elusive residents are rarely seen in the area.

Sydney Wild Wombats Tour Highlights

This Sydney wombat tour highlights are:

  • opportunity to get close to wombats and kangaroos in the wild in their native habitat
  • spectacular scenery and waterfalls
  • a walk through a rain forest

  • comfortable late model air conditioned vehicle (sedan, minivan or minibus depending on group size)
  • private group (no other people holding up the tour)
  • full day tour

Customer Focused

We use comfortable transport. Our wild wombat tour Sydney departures are normally scheduled so that we arrive at the wild wombat area around late afternoon and within national park opening times. We take our guests away from the main tourist routes.

Private Wombat Tours

As all of our excursions are completely private tours, we can pick you up and drop you from anywhere in Sydney. It also means that the only people on the wombat tour are your group. This means that we spend more time with the wild wombats and kangaroos and are not limited by someone else’s timetable.

Age Aware

With prior notice, we can take children as young as 3 years old. We can also modify the tour for people with walking difficulties.

Health Aware

We also, thoroughly clean and sanitise the vehicle between each tour. This is something that is important to some in these times of COVID-19.

Best Wombat Tour Available

This is the best wild wombat tour or experience operating from Sydney. At times we are able to see 20 to 30 of these beautiful animals and who doesn’t want to see a wombat when in Australia?

This is a true wild animal experience with wild wombats, not just a walk through a zoo or animal reserve. Moreover, that means that whilst you may get quite close, they are wild animals and you will not be able to touch them.

Wombats are unique

wild wombat tour

The word wombat comes from the Darug aboriginal language. Whilst this shy cousin to the koala appears slow and awkward, it can attain speeds of over 40km/h for short sprints. It is the world’s largest burrowing animal with digging comparable to a badger. These primarily nocturnal animals live in burrows with many chambers that it creates. Wombats live in burrows in  a variety of habitats including forests, woodlands, and grassland. Their burrows often have multiple branching tunnels and entrances. The entrances are often marked with dung and urine.

Backward opening pouch

In contrast to the kangaroo, wombats have a backward opening pouch this prevents dirt getting in the pouch when digging. This is similar to their closest cousin the koala and also the bandicoot.

Wombat’s unique cuboid poop

Wombat scat is cuboid, that is, it comes out in the shape of a cube, even though their anus is circular (for more on cube poop click here). It turns out you can push a square poop through a round hole. However, over time, it softens and becomes round.

wombat poop
wombat poop

Wombats defend themselves well

When threatened, wombats can either attack with their strong teeth and claws or hide in a burrow with their tough backside blocking the entrance. As their rump is almost all cartilage, they are unlikely to get hurt and there is very little for a would be predator to hold onto. They also have strong sharp claws and a bite that can go through 2cm of boot, socks and flesh. Additionally, they have teeth that resemble those of rodents and never stop growing.

Wombats may look slow with their unique waddle. However, when needed they can run as fast as Husein Blot over short sprints (up to 40km/h). Given that they can grow to about 40kg making wombats the second largest marsupial (after the kangaroo), they can also charge at and knock down a human being.

Mangy wombat

A group of wombats is called a wisdom and the disease mange is found in many wombat wisdoms. It can cause major itching that can even lead to death and can be spread to other animals including humans. Whilst there is a lot being done to try and eradicate it in wombat populations, unfortunately to date this has been unsuccessful.

Wild wombats in their own habitat

Experiencing wombats in their own habitat is an amazing rewarding experience and one that will live with you for years to come. The wombat is very unique and nothing like them exists natively anywhere else in the world.

What does a wombat look like

Trying to explain what a wombat looks like is often quite difficult. These short stocky powerful creatures have no similar looking family. They look a little like the hyrax (or dassies) of Africa and a little like a Capybara with short stocky legs. However, the hyrax is a relative of the elephant and the Capybara is a rodent. It also looks like a gigantic hamster, also a rodent. One of our guests told me that they look a little like a badger. However, the only similarity that I can see is that they are great diggers.

The wombat, however, bears no resemblance to either of these animals past a cursory glance. In fact, it is a direct descendent of the mighty Diprotodon, a similar creature that looked the same but was 1.8 metres high and 4 metres long and died out some time after the aboriginals arrived in Australia.

Sydney Wild Wombats Tour Guarantee
These are wild animals. As such, there is no guarantee that any wombats will be there for us when our tour arrives. However, if there are none, we will provide you an opportunity to attend on another occasion at no charge. This has never happened for this tour.

Other Wildlife on Tour

In addition to the wombats, we see other wild animals. We see kangaroos and usually wallabies. We also sometimes see echidnas (mainly in warmer months), flying foxes (fruit bats) (in warmer months), water dragons (mainly in warmer months), lyrebirds, pelicans, cockatoos, corellas, galahs, eastern rosellas, crimson rosellas, kookaburras, magpies and more.

What to bring on your walking with wild wombats Sydney tour

Please wear or bring walking boots or shoes for your tour. Sometimes the area becomes a little boggy. Also wearing warm clothes is an advantage, especially in winter when it can get quite cool. Moreover, good quality photographic equipment that can be used in the dark is important as this is when the wild animals are most active.

Wild Wombats Sydney Tour Testimonials

★★★★★ Jacque H

“The tour was awesome! It was an enjoyable day from start to finish. The timing of each event was well-paced so we did not feel rushed at any point. The view at the Kiama Blow Hole was amazing, as well as the waterfalls. Kangaroo Valley is well worth the drive and is the place where we saw Echidna, Wombats, Kangaroos, and Wallaby. Our guide was encouraging and patient as we waited for the perfect photo opp with the wildlife. We had four teens on the tour and they were definitely engaged.

★★★★★ Kat A

“Absolutely fantastic!! We had only one day to see animals and see the amazing location. This tour was more than what I expected. We saw the blowholes, rainforest, waterfalls, many kangaroos, two types of wallabies, and many wombats! I highly recommend this tour.”

kangaroos & pelicans

Kangaroos and Pelicans

Join us on a day expedition to see wild kangaroos and pelicans not far from Sydney in the comfort of one of our private tours.

Everyone knows that kangaroos are enthralling with their amazing uniqueness (pouches, hopping, life cycle, etc). However, what you may not know, is that our beautiful pelicans can also amaze. Additionally, these beautiful creatures of the air and sea have some secrets themselves. We can trace their family back 30 million years? …and of course everyone knows the limerick.

“A wonderful bird is the pelican.
His beak can hold more than his belly can.
He can hold in his beak enough food for a week.
But I’ll be damned if I can see how the hell ‘e can.”

Pelican Experience

Pelicans are found all around Australia. These beautiful majestic black and white birds inhabit fresh and salt water lakes and estuaries, rivers, swamps and seashores. Furthermore, in Sydney and The Central Coast, we often see them atop electric lamp posts. With a wingspan of up to 2.5 metres and a beak big enough to scoop up large fish, they are impressive birds.. Moreover, The Entrance, a beautiful coastal town with a large sand bar, is home to one of the world’s largest colonies of pelicans. Here flocks of people join groups of pelicans. On weekends, volunteers examine the majestic birds for fishing hooks and line in their stomachs, wings and other parts of their body whilst we learn about the wild pelicans.

See these huge birds up close and personal and get to understand their true beauty and size! The hardworking volunteers from Marine Wildlife Rescue will share their valuable knowledge on all things pelicans

Walking with Urban Kangaroos

At another coastal town, we see urban kangaroos wandering around. This township is shared by humans and wild kangaroos alike. Sometimes we see these urban big foots leaping down the otherwise sleepy street. Whilst you may not be able to see kangaroos jumping down Pitt St, we often see them here in people’s gardens. Moreover, we see them grazing on the local sports field and parklands. Depending on the time of year, we may see a joey poke its head out of its mother’s pouch. Undeniably, they are fascinating and mesmerising to watch. Also, you will learn about the fascinating lives of these amazing animals.

In addition to seeing sometimes scores of kangaroos, we often see some of Australia’s beautiful native bird life such as the beautiful rainbow lorikeets, galahs, cockatoos and kookaburras. This is a unique experience.

Highlights

The highlights of this tour are:

  • Finding urban kangaroos
  • Watching the Pelicans at The Entrance

If desired, we can add a visit to the Australian Reptile Park at Gosford on the Central Coast, where you are able to see many of Australia’s unique wildlife including kangaroos (including tree kangaroos), wallabies, wombats, koalas, dingos, salt water crocodiles, koalas, quokkas, echidnas, platypus, flying foxes, tasmanian devils, etc as well as some of our species or spiders (including the funnel web & red back spiders) and snakes.

What to bring with you

Bring comfortable walking shoes, hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, camera, water bottle and a jacket.

Urban Kangaroos Sydney

Urban Kangaroos are no myth and they are found not far from Sydney.

You may have heard about kangaroos hopping down Pitt St and kind of figured it was a myth. Whilst it is true that a wallaby was once seen crossing our Harbour Bridge with NSW Police in hot pursuit and a Ferry was known to fish a wallaby from our Harbour, it is not normal to see these animals in the city centre. Even ‘Skippy The Bush Kangaroo’ lived in Waratah Park at Terrey Hills, a suburb away from the centre. However, there are little known areas of the metropolis and beyond, where it is possible to see roos. Travel Ideology’s Tours can even take you to show that the stereotypical kangaroo living in people’s front yards does actually exist in some places. This tour focuses on seeing urban kangaroos, ie. those roos that live in an urban environment sharing their town with people.

Kangaroos are unique

The original kangaroos (Procoptodon) stood at 2 metres high not much taller than the current red kangaroos and appeared in Australia before the aboriginals arrived. Kangaroos are the real big foot. They are from the family macropod, literally big foot. Their large feet have tendons that act as springs and allow them to hop, attaining speeds faster than a racehorse. With amazing reproductive capabilities, great speed and intelligence, roos are impressive. However, in this trip you will see them living alongside human beings. This is something that you really need to see. Add it to your bucket list and join us for a very memorable trip.

Unique Excursion – Town Dwelling Roos

Kangaroos and people do not live together normally. In fact, in some areas of Australia, they have become a pest. With a more than 3 to 1 ratio of roos to people it is easy to understand why.

However, in this township the residents, both human and kangaroo alike have found  a way to coexist in harmony in an urban environment. This is no wildlife reserve or sanctuary. There are no fences to keep the roos in or out or separated from the human beings. Very few people from the city and very few people from outside of Australia get to experience this unique situation. This is something special and an animal encounter you will remember for the rest of your life.

Kangaroos in interesting surroundings

Here live some urban dwelling wild roos you may like to see with the help of Travel Ideology. We offer tours to see these majestic animals in some quite unusual surroundings. We often see roos in people’s gardens and front yards, heeding at give way signs, post boxes, looking after the garbage, tending to gardens, guarding cars, visiting friend’s houses and in many other interesting instances. This is a built up township nor far from our city and it needs to be experienced to be believed.

Get close but stay safe

It is an interesting opportunity to get close, but not too close, to wild roos in this unique environment. We often see some very pregnant mothers with joeys inside and outside of the pouch as well as macho macropods, often looking as ripped as Arnold Schwarzenegger. Apart from the roos, we also often see rainbow lorikeets, sulphur crested cockatoos and kookaburras in the same area. Occasionally, we have also seen galahs and eastern rosellas.

Urban (or peri-urban) kangaroos are a special sight. Because they are more used to people, they also need to be treated differently from other wild roos. Your guide will help you remain safe throughout the encounter – just listen to the advice they give.

Sunset Tours

We normally run the tours to coincide with sunset as this is the time the kangaroo population is most active and easily spotted.

Photo Gallery

Below is a photo gallery of some images of urban macropods in a township we visit. You may see similar sights from our Pelicans and Kangaroos tour. or as a tour by themselves.

One of the best tours and tour guides in Sydney

“This tour was one of the biggest highlights of our whole trip! Bruce is an amazing tour guide. We saw so many kangaroos in the wild, including a huge male, many females, and a baby in a pouch! We had seen some kangaroos at the wildlife sanctuary but it just didn’t compare at all to the experience of seeing them in the wild. We learned so much about these amazing animals from Bruce.

He’s also just an incredibly kind person. There was a major traffic jam on the way back so he took out his own time to take us somewhere to eat so that we could enjoy a nice dinner while the traffic cleared. Couldn’t recommend Bruce and this tour enough!.

This is a true wild animal experience with wild kangaroos roaming free, not a walk through a zoo or animal park. That means that whilst you may get close on this tour, you will not be able to touch them.

Kangaroos are unique

Kangaroos are unique animals in many ways. They are of the family “macropod” meaning big foot, so they are the only real life “Big Foot” scientifically proven anywhere in the world. They cannot walk backwards and are the largest animal to get around by hopping. Their babies travel in the pouches for up to 18 months. They hold records as some of the highest and longest jumpers in the world and propel themselves at up to 65km/h or faster than a race horse. Some say they are cute bundles of fur.

The female kangaroo (doe) can hold an embryo and two joeys at the same time making different milk for each of the joeys and holding the embryo in suspended animation until conditions are right in adverse times. A rather amazing talent, is that they can even determine the gender of their offspring. You will learn more on one of our kangaroo tours.

Kangaroos are a Symbol of Australia

The kangaroo is a symbol of Australia, appearing on both the coat of arms and the Australian Olympic flag. They appear on our coins and postage stamps and are the symbol of our national carrier. Our sports teams are often named after them. Our sporting teams are often named after them – The Wallabies. The Australian Rugby League Team Tour of England is named the Kangaroo Tour. The Australian men’s basketball team is known as the Boomers (a male kangaroo is a boomer).

Australia is the only country in the world to eat the animals on its coat of arms. Their meat is very healthy being high in protein, low in fat and having no cholesterol. It also tastes delicious.

Other Australian fauna

We often see native birds there (including kookaburras, galahs, sulphur crested cockatoos, eastern rosellas, crimson rosellas, rainbow lorikeets, magpies, etc). You will see trees commonly only found in Australia, as we drive and walk through the Australian bush. Moreover, this is typical Australia. On this unique tour, not only will you see a wild kangaroo near Sydney, you may also see some other and Australian wildlife and beautiful locations. If you want to see more Australian animals, consider our walking with wild wombats tour.

Inclusions

Our Sydney kangaroo tour price includes pickup, transport to the wild kangaroos and return to your central Sydney pickup point.

If you would prefer, we can take you on a tour to a town where wild kangaroos roam the streets. Here you will see them in people’s gardens. See Urban Kangaroos Also, where it is not possible to see wild roos in the national parks (parks may be closed due to flood or bushfire threat, etc or the roos may not be able to be spotted due to opening times, etc) we may choose to upgrade you to this tour at no charge.

The best Kangaroo experience ever

“Bruce has the best excursion I have ever been on in my life. I have been on at least 500. He is the nicest most knowledgeable caring travel operator I have ever been with. My daughter and I saw a truly amazing amount of kangaroos. Bruce pointed out so many bits of information about many of the kangaroos and there environment and where to see them. I can’t even believe the incredible experience we had I am truly thankful and am sure there will never be another excursion that could ever surpass or be as incredible as this. Huge check off my bucket list.

Close up encounter of kangas in their natural environment!

“We couldn’t imagine traveling to Australia and not having a kangaroo experience but we’re not into supporting zoos. Bruce’s private guided excursion was the perfect answer! He picked us up at our hotel and filled our heads with all things kangaroo for the 45 min drive to the western suburbs of Sydney. Our excursion was early evening to catch the kangas during peak grazing time but I also liked that the timing allowed us to pack more into our day!

While I get that there are no guarantees, let me say that we hit the “Kanga jackpot” with Bruce, observing no fewer than 30-40 kangaroos in their natural settings! Bruce knew just where to find them! We viewed some from his car but also got out and got close enough for great photos and observation, including moms with joeys in pouches and large males!I highly recommend this excursion with Bruce!

Once in a lifetime experience!! Kangaroos galore 🥰 Don’t miss out – book now!

“I’m left standing speechless! We weren’t sure what to expect- and it turned into a once in a lifetime experience!

From the moment we booked the private tour, Bruce kept in touch with us and provided clear details of our tour! The expectation is that we would go on a kangaroo scouting adventure! And Bruce fulfilled!!!

… Our first encounter with a kangaroo took my breath away. I sat in the backseat with my window down and couldn’t believe it! There he was just staring at me! As we drove on, I thought, oh no- what if we don’t see anymore… Ha! Wow- did we ever see kangaroos! …

We booked the private tour knowing that it was just us and Bruce in his car! Bruce provided educational information about kangaroos and also pointed out beautiful Australian birds throughout the drive (cockatiels, colorful parrots and Kookaburra)!”

If you’re thinking of way to see kangaroos in Australia- this tour is definitely it! You won’t be disappointed- you’ll be walking away with such a warm feeling in your heart knowing you walked around the Australian parks with kangaroos in their natural habitat. Priceless!!!

Exceeded our expectations

“Exceeded our expectations. Pleasant drive thru the country in a comfortable auto. We saw dozens of kangaroos in the wild. We were able to get out and walk near them. Bruce was delightful and very informative. We highly recommend.

★★★★★ Mark V

“We didn’t know what to expect from this tour. Well, it turned out to be a highlight of our visit to Australia! We literally saw hundreds of kangaroos from as close as 10 meters! Got tons of great pictures and made memories to last a lifetime! Our guide was a pro and was full of fun facts about kangaroos and Australia. Highly recommend!”

★★★★★ Bill S

“Bruce was great! We had great fun and the Kangaroos and setting exceeded our expectations. We saw lots, many at close range. The tour name is apply named.”

★★★★★ Dan J

“This tour might have been the highlight of our week-long trip to Australia. Our tour guide, Bruce Josephs, was engaging and well-versed on the subject of Kangaroos. He took us to a remote part of the Sydney metropolitan area where we saw hundreds of free-roaming Kangaroos. We didn’t get too close to them (they are wild animals, after all) but we were able to take dozens of pictures and videos. It was a great time and I highly recommend this tour to any visitors!”

★★★★★ Erik B

“This was excellent. Not only did we see dozens and dozens of kangaroos in the wild, we had a superb travel companion in Bruce. He knows his kangaroos, but has also traveled the world and brings a terrific perspective to all things Sydney and Australia. He went above and beyond to ensure we had a good experience when we were delayed by thunderstorms, and really made it a great tour for my twelve year old son (and me!). Highly recommended!”

★★★★★ George G

“Bruce the guide was awesome. We hoped to see kangaroos and we saw so many it far exceeded our expectations. Started with a spotless clean car that’s semi-battery so when we are close that the car engine doesn’t scare them. We went through a neighborhood where we saw kangaroos then to a national park and walked through a field and watched about 10-15 of them enjoying the vegetation from about 10 feet away. We saw amazing birds including the beautiful Rainbow laurakeets.

When the tour was over Bruce was supposed to drop us at the Ferry – well he stopped there and checked it out first to be sure it was running which it was not and then took us to the train station. I’m sure another guide may have dropped us and drove off. The tour was supposed to be 3-1/2 hours, at 4 hours Bruce said if you guys have just a few more minutes we can take a drive to a park where I know the cockatoo hang out at night. They are amazing birds. Bruce was more interested in our tour and seeing the wildlife than he was the clock. He was awesome and I would recommend him and this tour to anyone.

★★★★★ Carlos L

“Una experiencia única. Bruce (nuestro guía) , conoce muy bien el área, sabe mucho y
hablaba muy bien español.
Inperdible.”

★★★★★ Steve A

“Bruce was an outstanding guide! He was knowledgeable and very friendly! We found at least 40 Kangaroos in the wild with amazing photo opportunities, This experience is highly recommended.”

★★★★★ Alain C

“From the meeting time with our guide Bruce up to the last minute of this discovery, we had a blast. Not only Bruce knew his way around, he knew so many facts about the city, the country, the animals, it shows that he’s doing his job with passion. We we’re lucky to see more than a few kangourous, but probably around 50 of them. And always ready to point birds flyng around and giving us details about them. Thank you so much Bruce for the kindness , knowledge and friendship you gave us during this tour.”

★★★★★ Susan G

“Enjoyed seeing such healthy and happy kangaroos. We were able to get quite close. Bruce is a terrific guide and I learned a lot of information I didn’t know. Well worth the price to be on a private tour. Thanks for the great tour, Bruce!”

★★★★★ Jean H

“It was so exciting to see wild Kangaroos! We took some great pictures and it was such an experience to see them jumping across a field. And seeing a Joey nursing from his mother’s pouch! Bruce gave us lots of information about kangaroos and Australia in general. It was a wonderful tour that I would recommend to everyone.”

★★★★★ Vt Pare

“Bruce did an awesome job of keeping us entertained through conversation on the drive from our hotel to where we could find wild kangaroos. The national park he took us to had male, female, and joeys – we were able to see some out on open grassy areas and others in the brush/bush. Bruce also pointed out other wildlife that we would not see where we are from. Highly recommend you give this trip serious priority!”

★★★★★ Expedition

“My Grandson and I had a great time, we were able to get very close to the Kangaroos and get great pictures. Our tour guide Bruce Josephs was awesome, very knowledgeable.”

★★★★★ Johan L

“We (family of 6) did a fantastic tour and saw up to 60 wild kangaroos just a bit outside Sydney. Bruce did a great job in spotting them…”

★★★★★Karl U

We also received this email

“Hi Bruce just to say a big thank you for this evening – what a great and interesting tour we both really enjoyed it! Here’s one of my more interesting pictures from my phone which may be of interest (I can’t get the pictures from my camera until I get home) – big thanks once again and I’ll be sure to recommend this to anyone coming to Sydney, very best wishes Giselle and Ben”

Private Sydney Tour Testimonials

★★★★★ Gail M

"We are a group of 6 friends and had such a wonderful day with Bruce. Bruce was so helpful in planning a great day for our group. We had a wonderful lunch at Icebergs while watching the surfers and then it was on to beautiful scenic outlooks. Of course we ended up the day watching wild kangaroos. What fun we had watching joeys nurse and jump in and out of their mother's pouch. We thought that was going to be the highlight until we saw the male teens practice their boxing moves. Bruce was such a delight and was so good at spotting the wildlife and telling us all about kangaroos. A must adventure for all ages."

Blue Mountains Tour Sydney

Our Blue Mountains Tour Sydney is an opportunity to visit this amazing wilderness of eucalyptus forests at our city’s doorstep. The Blue Mountains area is an amazing world heritage listed wilderness at the door of a world-class city of 5 million people (only 70kms from the CBD). The 470 million year old UNESCO World-Heritage Listed National Park is mostly virgin bush, lush forests and breathtaking views. It covers an area of 2690 square kilometres and is larger than the country of Luxembourg.

The Greater Blue Mountains area at 11,400 square kilometres is larger than countries such as Lebanon and Jamaica. Explorers and convict labour carved out access to the area roughly 200 years ago. Many of its roads utilise the beautiful Hawkesbury sandstone that abounds in the area. Back then it took 21 days to travel from the CBD. The route now takes an easy hour and a half by road or rail.

The area is a treasure trove of natural beauty and adventure. Our Blue Mountains tour showcases its unique blend of iconic landmarks, modern attractions, and ancient wonders, this region continues to captivate visitors from around the world. Whether you seek outdoor adventure, or a quiet retreat, the area has something for everyone, making it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the wonders of Australia.

Wonderful nature experience

As you ascend into the Blue Mountains, the panoramic vistas that unfold before your eyes will mesmerise you. See verdant valleys carpeted with lush foliage, rugged cliffs draped in a mystical blue haze, and cascading waterfalls that plunge into deep gorges below.

This hilly sandstone national park feature one of the world’s largest eucalyptus forests with beautiful steep yellow Hawkesbury sandstone cliffs, deep green forested valleys and fresh clean mountain air. The name of the area comes from the slight azure blue colour seen from a distance, as a result of the forest’s evaporating eucalyptus oil. The area’s national park sports a great diversity of wildlife including flora and fauna not found anywhere else in the world.

Stunning nature and views

We stop at excellent viewpoints to look out over the valley floor and brilliantly coloured sandstone cliff walls. Here we see amazing landscapes, breath-taking scenery, possibly see some native birds (including cockatoos, magpies, kookaburras, rainbow lorikeets, galahs and king parrots) and other wildlife. People come to admire, bushwalk, orienteer, rock climb, abseil, mountain bike, horse ride and basically get back to nature. Its clean air and natural beauty are a drawcard for people from all over the world.

Three Sisters Rock Formations

There are a number of sights that one must see when coming to see Sydney’s azure coloured Mountains. These sights form stops on our Sydney Blue Mountains tour. The area is home to the Three Sisters, a rugged formation of three rocky outcrops that stand side by side. The Three Sisters is perhaps the most iconic and recognizable feature of the Mountains area. This striking rock formation, standing tall and proud, is a symbol of the region.

According to Indigenous Australian folklore, the Three Sisters were three beautiful sisters turned to stone for their own protection. Dreamtime legend tells of three sisters named Meehni, Wimlah and Gunnedoo. In the legend, the young girls fell in love with men from another tribe but the relationships were expressly forbidden. The men were brothers and warriors, and decided to take the sisters by force. As a result, the Kuradjuri (clever man) of the Gundungurra people turned the sisters into stone.

We observe them from the Echo Point Lookout, offering visitors a stunning panoramic view of the Jamison Valley and surrounding cliffs.

Wentworth Falls

From here, we see how the valley formed as the sandstone sides gave way. Another point of interest is Wentworth Falls. Wentworth Falls is a spectacular natural attraction that combines the grandeur of the  Mountains with the serenity of cascading waterfalls stretching the height of the sandstone walls. A series of lookouts, including the popular Wentworth Falls Lookout, offer visitors views of the majestic falls as they plunge into the valley below. The area is also a fantastic starting point for various bushwalks, providing visitors with an opportunity to immerse themselves in the lush surroundings.

Both Echo Point and Wentworth Falls provide us with spectacular viewpoints of the sandstone cliffs the area is famous for during our Mountains tour.

Our Blue Mountains Tour Sydney is completely customisable

This Blue Mountains Tour is completely yours and we can either design a tour for you or you can tell us where you wish to go. We can tailor it for those who wish to walk challenging trails or those with young kids or seniors in their party. We can increase or decrease the amount of walking. The choice is yours.

We have two standard tour options.

The first, our Blue Mountains Tour Highlights includes:

  1. Wentworth Falls
  2. Echo Point
  3. Scenic World (Skyway, steepest railway and cableway
  4. Drive through Leura, a beautiful mountain township

Our second option includes a stop at Featherdale Wildlife Park.

We can also arrange to take you on one of our Sydney tours to Jenolan Caves to experience a guided cave tour by a specialist cave guide.

Echo Point (and The Three Sisters)

Echo Point is a highlight on any trip to the Mountains. This provides a stop to see the amazing colours of the sandstone cliffs as well as a rock formation known as the ‘Three Sisters’ which appears as three sandstone roughly pillar shaped sandstone rocks. This is what the area is known for in terms of scenery.

Wentworth Falls

Wentworth Falls offers spectacular views of the waterfall and sandstone escarpment with an option to walk to the top of the waterfall. Lyre birds and parrots are occasionally seen in the area. We will see banksia and eucalyptus trees standing near the edge of the massive cliffs.

Scenic Railway, Skyway and Cable Car

Katoomba, the area’s largest town, is home to Scenic World. The scenic railway takes you to the base of the forest floor and offers the steepest railway in the world at a 52 degree incline (an ex mining railway), allowing you to look directly down upon the valley far below. Then, we walk around the base of the valley under the tree canopy.

Here we see some century old fig trees and ferns who species date back to the days of the dinosaurs. We also peer into the entrance to an old previously used mine, the original reason for the railway. To get back up again, the cable car is a nice option. Then we will cross from one side of the valley to the other using the Skyway where we have the opportunity to see Katoomba Falls. We include the cost of all three rides in your tour price. We can also collect you from the other side when you take the scenic Skyway.

Katoomba and Leura

We drive through the beautiful mountain towns of Katoomba and Leura. These townships offer a very different view of Australia to the cities and county towns with their art deco shops, pastry shops and curio sellers.

Featherdale Wildlife Park Add-On

Featherdale Wildlife Park specialises in Australian native wildlife and has all your favourites including kangaroos, koalas, echidna, wombats, saltwater crocodiles, Tasmanian devils, emu, wallabies, quokkas, dingo, etc. Here, for an additional fee, you can even pat a koala and feed kangaroos. Our Mountains highlights and Featherdale Park tour price includes entrance to Featherdale Wildlife Park (2nd option above). Here, you can get close to a koala for a wonderfully memorable photo, feed a kangaroo, and discover some of Australia’s unique fauna.

Jenolan Caves Add-On

Jenolan Caves offers a large limestone cave area on the far side of the Mountains where it is possible to take guided tours of some caves and we may see some wild kangaroos. It is also the best known cave system in NSW. Because we only use small vehicles, we can use alternative routes to access the caves when the main road closes as happens from time to time, although this can add significant travel time.  Beneath the surface, Jenolan Caves is a labyrinth of underground chambers adorned with stunning limestone formations. These caves, the oldest open caves in the world, are a testament to the beauty that can be found beneath the earth’s crust. Guided tours lead you through several of the caves, and we can arrange to have you there for one of these tours.

What to bring with you on your Blue Mountains Sydney tour

Bring comfortable walking shoes, hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, camera, water bottle and a jacket. At over one kilometre above sea level, it is generally about 6 degrees cooler that Sydney city.

Northern Beaches Sydney Tour

Sydney Northern Beaches – A paradise in a city

Our Northern Beaches Sydney Tour shows a paradise within a city.  Just a short drive away from the city’s bustling metropolis, are our Northern Beaches. They offer a captivating blend of coastal beauty, pristine beaches, and a laid-back lifestyle. This collection of beachside suburbs is a haven for both locals and tourists, providing an escape from the city’s hustle and bustle.  Moreover, it is a combination of sun, surf and a relaxed lifestyle. This is set against a beautiful bushy background is just the beginning of what the area offers.

The region encompasses beaches and coastline from Manly Beach to Palm Beach and as far out as Forestville, Frenchs Forest, Ingleside and Terrey Hills. Led by a Sydneysider who grew up in this beautiful seaside area, you will be in for a treat. With stunning beaches, breath-taking waterways, mind blowing scenery and a laid back seaside culture, it is difficult to find a comparison anywhere else in the world. In fact, there are likely only a few modern cities with a population of 5 million or more offering beautiful safe swimming areas in a climate where the city’s people can enjoy them.

An isolated northern peninsular

Our Sydney Northern Beaches are linked to the rest of the city by only 3 access points (Spit Bridge, Roseville Bridge and Mona Vale Rd). This isolates it from the rest of our metropolis ensuring its unique culture remains. Moreover, this Beaches peninsular is a treat with sandy foreshores and coastlines, beautiful bush, pure water and air so clean you need to breathe it to believe it. With its relaxed coastal living, its natural beauty, cultural richness and proximity to a large modern metropolis, it is something special.  It is something you will really want to get to know. This region has a unique sense of community spirit, with a strong emphasis on the outdoors and a laid-back coastal lifestyle.

A diversity of Sydney beaches and waterways

Asking which of our beaches is best is possibly only a question for people who have not visited the area. Basically, some are better for surfing such as Long Reef with its great break. Others are sheltered for swimming such as Freshwater and Whale Beaches. Whilst some are relatively secluded, beaches like Manly and Dee Why Beaches have restaurants and cafes overlooking them. Many have their own charm.

In addition to the surf side seashore, the area is known for its splendid waterways and offers a lake, 2 lagoons and 2 major waterways in the form of Pittwater and Sydney Harbour.

Our Northern Beaches offers a relaxed culture that revolves around water activities

This ‘Beaches and Bush’ Peninsula in the northern part of our city is synonymous with water activities. It boasts 30 kilometres of beautiful golden sandy coastline and picture perfect scenery. From the Norfolk pine fringed Manly beach-side to the palm trees of Palm Beach, the area is a recreational heaven. You will pass sparkling waterways where boats bob up and down in the calm sparkling waters. Moreover, people swim, surf, body surf, snorkel, sail, kayak, windsurf, boat and fish throughout the area. Hence, you will see the sailing and motor boats as we traverse the foreshores of this amazing area of the world. Furthermore, many people jog, run and cycle taking in the area’s clean salted air. What’s more, surf life savers patrol every major beach in the area.

The insular peninsula, as it is known, is a great equaliser. Whilst some of the most expensive real estate is there and it is a popular place to live for some of the city’s movers and shakers, the people are really down to earth. Even the ex prime minister Tony Abbott was often interviewed coming out of the surf in just his Speedos. Moreover, people from all walks of life go into the fish and chip shops in just their swimmers and thongs.

Bushy Northern Suburbs

In addition to the wonderful water, the area has more than its share of bush in the national parks and leafy suburbs. Ku-ring-gai National Park at the Northern extreme of the Beaches offers stunning views and untouched bush. Moreover, our Beaches tour offers the opportunity to visit small secluded beaches where at times we will be on your own after a long walk through the bush. We may be able to see the city skyline from North Head. Throughout our Northern Beaches Tour you will be surprised at the amount of greenery in the suburbs we pass.

Unique side of Sydney

A small group private tour of this area is a fascinating way to see a side of this city that many people never experience. Even people who have lived in other parts of Sydney their whole lives have often never even experienced this area as you will experience it. This is a truly unique part of the world, shown off by someone who has lived there. Visit the amazing beaches and bush of the north. Explore the beautiful flora and amazing fauna and maybe see a wallaby, water dragon (a large lizard) or even a goanna (a larger lizard). We are to our knowledge, the only private Northern Beaches tour that takes you to where the wallabies live. See the beautiful harbours and sandy shores. Walk around the small rock pools and possibly see small sea life (such as sea anemones and small crabs).

Beaches Tour Highlights

Some of the highlights and inclusions of our full day beaches tour are:

  • With luck and dependent on season, see some wild animals such as wallabies, whales, goannas and water dragons as well as pelicans and parrots
  • Walk along a suburban sandy beach
  • Explore one of the city’s rock pools
  • Experience the pristine wilderness of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park
  • See Lion Island from West Head
  • See Summer Bay from Home and Away
  • View the city skyline from North Head, one of the city’s best vantage points
  • Catch the Manly Ferry back to the city (or we can drive you back if you prefer)

Did you know?

Freshwater Beach was the birthplace of surfing in Australia when a Hawaiian surfer, Duke Kahanamoku started showing off what he could do with a surfboard he’d made himself 100 years ago.

What to bring on your Northern Beachside tour.
Bring your swimming costumes and towel (if you wish to swim). Bring comfortable walking shoes, hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, camera, water bottle and a jacket.

Please contact us for more information about this tour or any other of our tours.
